Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have carried out an "island defense drill" in the city of Narashino in Chiba Prefecture. Sunday’s exercise, which involved maritime, land and air forces, was centered on recapturing an island from an enemy.
Speaking after the drill, Japan’s Defense Minister, Itsunori Onodera, warned that the country’s security situation was becoming more dangerous, as neighboring countries step up military modernization. He referred specifically to a recent rocket launch by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Onodera says the country’s Self-Defense Forces strive to protect Japanese territories and public safety.
About 20 aircraft and 33 armored vehicles took part in the drill.
