A Spanish soldier died on Friday after an armored vehicle being checked fell on him in Afghanistan, said the Spanish Defense Ministry.
Christian Quishpe Aguirre, 24, was in a support base for NATO troops in the west Afghan province of Herat when a BMR armored personnel carrier being checked fell upon him and took his life, the ministry said in a statement.
Aguirre, who was married and had a daughter, joined the Spanish Army in 2005. His body will be repatriated to his hometown in Zaragoza on Saturday.
The ministry said that the chief colonel of the Spanish base in Herat province has opened an investigation.
Since 2002, a total of 91 Spanish soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan.
