Kazakhstan has agreed that U.S. planes can fly over its territory on their way to Afghanistan, a U.S. official said Sunday after a meeting between visiting President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama.
"This will save money, it will save time, in terms of moving our troops and the supplies needed into the theater," said Mike McFaul, a security advisor to Obama who briefed reporters after their meeting.
Nazarbayev is here for a nuclear security summit to be opened on Monday.
The United States suspended all flying to Afghanistan via the Manas base in Kyrgyzstan as security concerns persisted after a nation wide protest forcing President Kurmanbek Bakiyev fleeing the capital city to the south.
