Several people suffered bruises from falling materials on their heads when a major earthquake and aftershocks jolted northern Sumatra on Wednesday afternoon, a local TV reported.

Two students were rushed to hospitals with bloody heads after being hit by falling materials.
People living in Bengkulu, West Sumatra and Aceh were told to get ready for evacuation after the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics agency (BMKG) issued tsunami warning following the 8.5 magnitude earthquake.
A senior official at the agency said that tsunami incited by the earthquake may create 6 meter-high tsunami wave.
The major earthquake with epicenter located 346 kilometers southwest from Aceh's Simeulue isles was also felt in Thailand, Malaysia, India, Myanmar and Singapore, some countries also reportedly issued tsunami warning.
British premier David Cameron who arrived in the Indonesian capital on a 2-day visit expressed his concern upon the major earthquake.
Aceh was hit by huge tsunami wave following a major earthquake in December 2004, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives in the westernmost Indonesian province.
