On Nov. 8, super typhoon Haiyan (locally named Yolanda) devastated Tacloban City and other shoreline towns of the island provinces of Leyte and Eastern Samar in the central Philippines, killing 6,109 and injuring 27,665 others. Another 1,779 people are still missing. The Philippine National Economic and Development Authority pegged the total damage and loss from Haiyan at 571.1 billion pesos (US$12.9 billion).
