The United States has requested the Hungarian government to join the U.S. in condemning Syria's government for the alleged use of chemical weapons, Hungarian News Agency MTI reported on Friday.
"We urge the Hungarian government to join us in condemning publicly the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons and in urging the international community to hold the regime accountable for this violation of a bedrock international norm", the U.S. embassy in Budapest said in a statement, according to the report.
Gabor Kaleta, press chief of the Hungarian foreign ministry said on Friday that Hungary would formulate its position on Syria in close cooperation with its allies. He said that Hungary firmly condemns the use of chemical weapons.
Kaleta added that Hungary had earlier broke diplomatic ties with Syria's government, which Hungary does not recognise as the country's legitimate representative.
