On July 12, 2010, the Fujian environmental authorities confirmed that a sewage leakage from the Zijinshan Copper Mine had caused serious pollution in the Tingjiang River, one of the largest waterways in Fujian.??The company didn't announce the pollution until nine days after the leaking started on July 3. Zijin Mining was later exposed of offering "shut-up fees" to journalists?in order to?prevent them from?running the story. Several?managing personnels of Zijin was detained after the toxic spill. The company was?also ordered to curb goldmine?output?to reduce environmental safety pressure.?In the end, Zijin was fined by US$1.43 million for the severe water contamination it had caused.
