Oracle hires former HP's Hurd 

Princeton University's economist Angus Deaton and Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman reviewed surveys of 450,000 Americans conducted in 2008 and 2009 for the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index that included questions on people's day-to-day happiness and their overall life satisfaction, Reuters reported. They found that happiness improved as income rose but the effect leveled out once people's incomes reached around $75,000. On the other hand, peoples overall sense of success and well-being continued to rise as their earnings grew beyond that point.

Kimani Maruge, a Kenyan farmer, became the world's oldest student when he started primary school at 84 after the country began offering free primary schooling for everyone, Xinhua reported. Sitting alongside 6-year-olds, Maruge wanted to learn to read so he could read the Bible for himself. He died of cancer last August at the age of 89. His inspirational experience was made into a film by Englishman Justin Chadwick, "The First Grader."

US President Barack Obama has unveiled a plan to spend $50 billion building roads, railways and airport runways next year in an effort to boost the country's chronic unemployment ahead of the November midterm elections, the Financial Times reported.

Oracle, the world's second-biggest software company, has hired former Hewlett-Packard CEO Mark Hurd as a president and member of the board reporting to CEO Larry Ellison, Bloomberg reported. Hurd exited HP last month after a probe into sexual harassment allegations.
