China opens first research station in inland Antarctica
China opens its first research station called Kunlun in inland Antarctica on January 27, 2009. The Kunlun Station is located 4,087 m above the sea level and 7.3 km southwest to Dome A. Fully constructed station covered an area of 558 m2. The main building, which covered an area of 236 m2, was erected on April 2009.
The station is China's third Antarctic station, the two other being the Great Wall station in the South Shetland Islands and the Zhongshan station in east Antarctica.
