Since its official founding in 1905, the University of Sheffield has grown in reputation and size to become one of the U.K.'s leading universities with a global reputation for teaching and research. It is one of the original "red brick" universities.
The university came into being from the merging of the Sheffield Medical School (founded in 1828), Firth College (1879) and the Sheffield Technical School (1884) in 1897 to form the University College of Sheffield. Its University Charter was granted in 1905.
As part of the Russell Group, this research-led institution has nearly 25,000 students including over 4,800 international students from 128 countries and regions and 5,500 staff in total. It has so far produced a number of leading figures in the area of research including five Nobel Prize winners, 12 fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering and 18 fellows of the Royal Society.
It was named "University of the Year" in 2011 in the Times Higher Education awards.
