Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is widely respected as one of the world's leading research institutions. It was the fourth university established in Scotland and the sixth in the U.K., and has been regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
Located in Scotland's capital city, the university is deeply embedded in the fabric of the city, with many of the buildings in the historic Old Town belonging to the university. It receives approximately 47,000 applications every year, making it the third most popular university in the U.K. by volume of applicants.
Edinburgh has been attracting world-class students and scholars for four centuries. The former and current alumni have been making genuine differences to the world in medicine, arts and science. The university is associated with nine Nobel Prize winners, one Abel Prize winner and a host of Olympic gold medalists.
