Written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar is an American 3D fantasy science-fiction film which was released in 2009. Set in the mid-22nd century, it tells the story of the mythical planet Pandora and its conflict between the indigenous residents and humans, who arrive on the planet to mine a precious mineral. Considered to be one of the biggest movie projects ever with an official budget of $237 million, the entire project began in 1994 . The film's 3D experience broke barriers in cinematic technology. Breaking several box office records, the film grossed more than $2 billion. In addition to the financial success, the film won three Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction.
