Conceived by George Lucas, the "Star Wars" film series is a classic American sci-fi fantasy saga. Set in a fictional universe, the Jedi knights fight the Galactic Empire ruled by the evil Sith for control of the galaxy. The first film, "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon upon its release in 1977. Its massive success led to two sequels to finish the original trilogy, "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) and "Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi" (1983). Sixteen years after the release of the original films, a new prequel trilogy was released with the final film released in 2005.
Grossing approximately $4.41 billion in total, the "Star Wars" film series is the third highest grossing film series of all time, following the "Harry Potter" and "James Bond" films.
