Directed by Peter Jackson, "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy comprises three fantasy adventure epic films based on the novels written by English author J.R.R. Tolkien. The trilogy includes "The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001), "The Two Towers" (2002) and "The Return of the King "(2003). The trilogy is set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, and follows the quest of Frodo Baggins and a fellowship of hobbits, men, dwarves, and elves. The fellowship seeks to destroy the One Ring to prevent the rise of its owner, the dark lord Sauron, to power over Middle-earth. Through a series of nearly impossible feats and epic battles, the ring is ultimately destroyed, defeating Sauron and saving the peoples of Middle-earth. Widely acclaimed, the trilogy was nominated for 30 Academy Awards and won 17.
