| The US made an apparent climb-down on its naval drill plans by deploying its aircraft carrier, USS George Washington, in the Sea of Japan, instead of in the Yellow Sea west of South Korea, following objections from China. Ralph Cossa, president of the Pacific Forum Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the move could present problems for the US and said that its military should at least assert a presence in the Yellow Sea by conducting a port call at Incheon on South Korea's west coast. |

| Despite a good wheat harvest in China this summer, the price of wheat has increased sharply. Analysts agreed fierce competition has raised the price. In China's market, Chinese state-owned purchasers, such as China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO) and China Grains & Logistics Corporation, compete with powerful foreign competitors, such as Singapore's Wilmar International Limited. Analysts expect the purchase price to gain in the second half of the year, but they said it will gradually become stable as supply grows. |

| Sales of digital e-books have outstripped real books for the first time, according to Amazon. Amazon.com announced Monday that it has sold 143 e-books for its Kindle e-reader for every 100 hardcover books over the past three months. And last month, the gap grew to 180 e-books for every 100 hardcovers. Amazon sold more than three times as many Kindle books in the first half of 2010 as in the first half of 2009, the firm said. Amazon's Kindle bookstore now offers more than 630,000 books as well as over 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright titles. |

| Google Tuesday announced on its Chinese-language site that it is to shut down a website ranking page and a lifestyle site, both based in China. The company said the decision was made because of "lower-than-expected demand". Google will also discontinue technical support for two services of its local partner Tianya.cn this week, the firm said. |

| Shandong Air flight SC4981 from Xiamen to Jinan was struck by lightning on Monday night and forced to land at Linyi City airport, 300 kilometers from Shandong provincial capital Jinan, Qilu Evening News reported yesterday. The cockpit suffered cracks and lost pressure but no injuries were reported. |
