| According to the New York Times, every year since 1993, the villagers of Inakadate, Japan have created pictures using rice paddies as their canvas and living plants as their paints and brushes. Their creations have been given a name - paddy art. As the village's creations became larger, more complex and multi-colored, they attracted growing media attention and hordes of curious tourists. Last year, more than 170,000 visitors clogged the narrow streets of this quiet community of 8,450 residents, queuing for hours to see the living art, and causing traffic jams. Residents of Inakadate hope paddy art will help revitalize their declining village. |

| Scientists at Coca-Cola are working on developments from plant-derived plastic to beverages with new textures, as the world's largest soft drink maker aims to stay ahead of consumers' changing tastes, Reuters reported on July 25. According to reports, future products will not necessarily be liquid. The company will continue to concentrate on beverages, but may experiment with snacks and sachets. In three to five years, Coke expects to be able to use second-generation biofuels including orange peel, bark and plant stalks, to make plastic bottles, in addition to first-generation fuels such as corn, soy and sugar cane. |

| At 10 pm on July 22, a woman drove her Mazda 6 car three times into a group of construction workers who were taking an evening break in a square in Zhengzhou city, Henan Province. Two of the workers were seriously injured, and three others slightly injured. The Zhengzhou Evening News said the woman, Li Fangfang, was detained by local police three days later. The 29-year-old had allegedly had a relationship with a labor contractor who worked on a nearby construction site. She had drunk 9 bottles of beer before the incident. |

| Authorities confirmed Sunday that 84 children in Heqing County, Yunnan Province are suspected of having lead poisoning, Xinhua reported. The children are being treated free of charge at a local hospital. Initial investigations showed the children may have inhaled lead fumes discharged from illegal gold metallurgy workshops in the villages. The government recently closed more than 200 illegal workshops and planted over 2,000 trees to curb air pollution. |

| A fault on the new Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey roller coaster at Universal Studios left 132 passengers trapped on the ride Friday night in Florida. All passengers were evacuated without injury within 45 minutes. Universal Studios representative Alyson Lundell said the ride had experienced a technical glitch, and after Universal crews carried out overnight tests no faults were discovered. |
